From 6th November 2023, the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) clinical team moved to the newly opened Canolfan Iechyd Genomig Cymru (CIGC) / Wales Genomic Health Centre located at the Cardiff Edge business park in Coryton North Cardiff. This site is just off Junction 32 of the M4 motorway and approximately 3 miles from its current location on the University Hospital of Wales campus.
Patients referred to the AWMGS clinical service for in-person genetic and genomic appointments will now have the option of attending the CIGC’s state-of-the-art and purpose-built clinic space. Patients will also continue to be offered telephone or video call appointments in accordance with their individual needs and preference.

Which Clinical Services Will Be Available at CIGC?

General genetics clinics
Cancer genetics clinics
Prenatal genetics clinics
Neurogenetics clinics

Why is the AWMGS Clinical Team Moving?

As demand for genomic services in Wales continues to increase, we would like to care for our patients in buildings that meet our desired standard of quality and the existing clinic spaces at the University Hospital of Wales in the Institute of Medical Genetics do not enable us to deliver on this long term. The CIGC offers spacious, comfortable and bright clinic areas that have been specifically designed to provide excellent patient care for those needing our genomics services. The CIGC is a hub for genomics which will now be the home of ongoing genomics research in Wales, which is essential to allow us to continue to enhance patient care.

What are the Benefits For Patients?
  • State-of-the-art, purpose-built clinic spaces – designed with on-going consultation and involvement of patients and members of the public, equipped with the latest technologies and resources. This upgrade promises improved patient care and patient experience in a bright, comfortable environment which has been carefully designed to help meet the varied needs of individuals who receive care from us.
  • Integration of services – the relocation of the AWMGS clinical team will place us in a collaborative space alongside other key partners within genomics, which will foster more sharing of knowledge, expertise and integration of services. This will provide more opportunities for innovation, leading to better services for patients now and in the future.
  • Improved sustainability of clinical services - as the broader demand on clinical services at the University Hospital of Wales continues to change and develop, we want to ensure that patients in Cardiff and South East Wales using the genomics service via AWMGS continue to have a space where their needs are prioritised. The new clinic space at CIGC provides a dedicated location, providing assurance to our patients for continuity of care and improved peace of mind.
  • Improved accessibility- the new location offers plenty of free onsite parking for those who access the site by vehicle. For patients with accessibility needs, there are disabled parking bays available, and the facility is accessible by ramp. In our reception and patient waiting area, there are accessible toilet facilities.
  • More flexibility to meet patient needs - the availability of the new clinic at CIGC means we can be more flexible than ever in meeting the varied needs of our patients as we continue to embrace innovative ways of conducting our appointments, with telephone and video based appointments being offered alongside this, where appropriate.
